Armed Robbery at Panera Bread

MILTON, GA -- City of Milton detectives are currently investigating the Thursday, Nov. 4 robbery of a Panera Bread (5304 Windward Parkway, Milton, 30004) in which no one was hurt.

Barry T. Lawrence, 18, of Forest Park is in custody in connection with the crime. He is currently being held in the Fulton County Jail on two counts of armed robbery by force and six counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.

His expected first appearance in front of a judge is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Fulton County Jail.

Officers arrived at the scene of the crime at 11:10 p.m. on an armed-robbery-in-progress call. An officer reported that he could see two black males running across Windward Parkway south into the woods behind Hotel Sierra Alpharetta (12505 Cingular Way, Milton, 30004).

Police found money, clothing belonging to the suspects and a Panera bread cash box in the area around the AT&T building on Cingular Way. A K9 search conducted by Roswell police initially did not turn up any traces of the suspects, so the officers went back into duty.

One of the five employees inside the store during the robbery told police he was exiting a side door when two black men ran up to him with handguns. They forced him back into the store, took his BlackBerry phone and made him lie on the ground. The men also took another employee's BlackBerry phone.

The man police allege was Lawrence found a female employee in the kitchen and forced her to the ground, while Lawrence's accomplice took the manager to the back of the store and made him open the safe.

One of the employees in the building was not found, as she hid behind an oven where she couldn't be seen. Another employee who had just arrived for work called 911 when he saw two men with guns outside the store. He reported to officers that he saw his manager held at gunpoint by Lawrence's accomplice.

During witness interviews, an Alpharetta police officer patrolling the area found Lawrence, who was wearing a turquoise Braves cap and a brown and turquoise letterman-style jacket covered in leaves, inside the Hotel Sierra Alpharetta.

Lawrence was arrested and searched. Officers reported finding one of the BlackBerry phones taken earlier in the night in his jacket pocket. They also reported finding several small, blue jeweler's bags containing suspected marijuana in his pants pocket.

Lawrence's alleged accomplice is being sought. He is described as a black male with a goatee and a tear drop tattoo on his face. During the robbery, he was wearing a plaid purple Air Jordan jacket and a black knit cap.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the second suspect is asked to call Capt. Shawn McCarty of the Milton Police Department at 678-242-2570.
