Driver charged in fatal Milton wreck

MILTON, Ga. -- A 46-year-old man faces several charges after causing an accident that killed a cyclist.

The wreck happened Wednesday, Apr. 29 at around 7:30 p.m. on Freemanville Road near Dartmouth Road in Milton.

Investigators determined John Blankenship of Canton was driving north on Freemanville Road, while five cyclists were heading south. Blankenship swerved into the southbound lane to pass another car and hit two of the cyclists. The impact caused the remaining three cyclists to crash.

The two cyclists who were struck were taken to a nearby hospital, while the rest were treated on the scene. Blankenship was charged with improper passing.

One of the cyclists, 42-year-old Jason Young of Canton, died May 2 of his injuries. Additional charges of homicide by vehicle and reckless driving were filed against Blankenship. He was booked in the Fulton County Jail.
