Milton tornado sirens launch Wednesday

MILTON, Ga. -- Today the City of Milton announced its tornado siren system will go live Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Matthew Marietta, the city's emergency manager and fire marshal, said Milton will have eight operational sites:

* Ga. 9 just south of Bethany Bend
* Francis Road one mile from the Cogburn Road intersection
* Hopewell Road north of the Manor subdivision
* Birmingham Road near Canterbury Chase
* Freemanville Road near the Pritchett Mountain water tower
* Fire station No. 43 (750 Hickory Flat Road)
* Thompson Road near North Christopher's Run
* Birmingham Highway at the Providence/New Providence roads intersection

Two more sites are expected at Ga. 140 near Old Holly Road (operations should begin in the first quarter of 2015) and at the site of Providence Park, which is still owned by Fulton County.

Atlanta-area unemployment decreases in October

(WXIA) -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate fell again last month.

October's rate was 7.0 percent, down from September's 7.3 percent. It was 7.6 percent in October 2013.

Fulton County's unemployment rate was 7.9 percent last month.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said the area added 18,800 jobs in October, which contributed to the rate decrease. Metro Atlanta has added nearly 58,000 jobs since October of last year. Fewer area residents filed for unemployment insurance last month too.

Metro Athens had Georgia's lowest October unemployment rate, at 5.4 percent. The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest, at 9.3 percent.

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Transportation has good news and bad news.

The bad news: Scheduled road maintenance will make weekend commutes difficult in several spots around Atlanta.

The good news: It's the last major construction weekend before workers take a break for Thanksgiving.

This weekend's projects include:

Clayton County
* 2 northbound lanes of I-75 will be closed at Highway 138 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete replacement.

Clayton/Henry counties
* 2 northbound lanes of I-75 will be closed between Hudson Bridge Road/Eagles Landing Parkway and Mount Zion Boulevard from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Sunday for concrete slab replacement.

Fulton County opens comment period for Annual Draft Action Plan

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County wants citizen review and comment on its Annual Action Plans and Consolidated Plan.  The Consolidated Plan requires local governments receiving federal funds directly from HUD, to determine strategies, community needs, long and short-term objectives, resources and proposed projects for submission as a combined planning and application document.

Weekend roadwork: I-285 and the south side

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Transportation will work on a number of infrastructure projects on Atlanta's highways this weekend.

Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid Interstates 20 and 285 on the west side of the city, as well as I-75 south of the Perimeter, if possible.

As always, all work is weather permitting.

Scheduled projects include:

Bartow County
* 2 southbound lanes of I-75 will be closed between one mile south of Emerson-Allatoona Road and two miles north of Glade Road Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for bridge maintenance.

Clayton/Henry counties

Fulton County to host Manpower recruitment at North Fulton Career Center

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- The North Fulton Workforce Development Career Center will host an onsite Recruitment session in partnership with Manpower on Wednesday November 5, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The North Fulton Career Center is located at 7741 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.

Manpower will be conducting application sessions and screening for Member Care Agents (Call Center/Banking), Maintenance Mechanics, Machine Adjusters, and Forklift Operators. Fulton County is ready for Election Day

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- On Tuesday, Nov. 4, all 370 precincts in Fulton County will open to welcome voters. The Fulton County Department of Registration and Elections is confident that pre-election preparations will result in an easy and pleasant voting experience for all electors. As always, administrative and technical support is available in the field and at the Election phone bank to address questions that may arise.

As of Oct. 30, 75,051 voters have cast ballots during early voting and 5,942 via absentee ballot.
