Kick off Independence Day with a free concert

MILTON, Ga. -- Start the Fourth of July weekend right with the second installment of Concerts in the Park: Boogie Down at Birmingham.

The Friday, July 1 show, like the other two in the series, will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Birmingham Park (750 Hickory Flat Road), located behind Milton Fire Station No. 43.

This 200-acre setting means lots of safe, open space to spread out and let the kids dance and play.

Milton's Parks and Recreation Department will have free giveaways to celebrate the holiday and the fact that July is Parks and Recreation Month.

ATLANTA – According to the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, “country music is a perennial Southern favorite in Atlanta and it won’t disappoint”. The music, which has its roots in the south, is known as a blend of, both, traditional and popular music. The country music genre gained widespread popularity around the mid-1900’s as music known as “hillbilly” or old-time music began to decline. Hillbilly music was a genre of music native to the people of the Ozarks. The music was usually played on acoustic instrument like a guitar or a banjo.

Over the years, old-time music changed however most of the lyrical content and instrumentation stayed the same. As it evolved, the arrangement of instruments grew to include the electronic keyboard, drums, the bass, fiddle and the harmonica.

Summer Concert Series begins this weekend

MILTON, Ga. -- Milton is proud to announce its first free Summer Concert Series, "Concerts in the Park: Boogie Down at Birmingham."

All shows will take place on Friday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Birmingham Park (15760 Birmingham Highway).

Refreshments will be provided by Wholly Pops and the Pup Truck, but attendees are also allowed to bring their own picnics and enjoy the free music.

Fall baseball registration begins next week

MILTON, Ga. -- Online registration for Hopewell Youth Association's (HYA) fall 2011 recreational baseball season will begin Monday, June 13 at the group's website.

The registration process is split into three parts.

The first, for Milton residents, opens June 13.

The second, which begins Monday, June 27, is for HYA veteran players who do not live in Milton.

The third, kicking off Monday, July 11, is open registration for everyone, regardless of residence or past league history.

Registration will close Sunday, July 24. A $25 late fee will be charged for any registrations after this date.

HYA, a longstanding non-profit organization, schedules and programs baseball activities at Milton's Bell Memorial Park (15245 Bell Park Road) through a joint agreement with the city.

Celebrate Memorial Day with the City of Milton

MILTON, Ga. -- Milton's fourth annual Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30 at City Hall (13000 Deerfield Parkway, 30004).

This year's celebration includes performances from local country singer Kennedy Taylor and Cara McDermott, principal trumpet player of the Milton High School Band. Madison Landis, a student at Hopewell Middle School, will read her special Memorial Day essay.

MILTON, Ga. -- The Milton Parks and Recreation Department will hold two summer camp open houses on Wednesday, May 25.

The informational event for Camp Joyful Soles will take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., while the Camp Bethwell open house will follow immediately from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Both meetings will be at City Hall (13000 Deerfield Parkway, 30004).

Fitness camp expands into summer with new classes

MILTON, Ga. -- After six months, hundreds of pounds and inches lost, and dozens of happy participants, the City of Milton/CorePhysique fitness camp is proud to announce it is expanding its services.

This summer, there will be two sessions of the ever-popular fitness camp.

The first will be from Monday, June 6 to Friday, July 1, while the second will stretch from Monday, July 11 to Friday, Aug. 5.

As always, there will be three morning classes offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays:

* 5:45 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.
* 7:15 a.m. to 8 a.m.
* 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

Three new classes will also be available for summer.

Smart Core will take place from 8:05 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. and can be attended by anyone who stays after the 7:15 a.m.
