ATLANTA -- Through its award-winning Livable Centers Initiative (LCI), the Atlanta Regional Commission is giving grant money to several local governments.

These grants will help the communities create new quality growth plans in certain locations or fund the implementation of a previously-awarded LCI study to enhance the livability of the areas.

The recipients for grants to fund new LCI study areas are the City of Milton and Cobb County, at $100,000 each.

"LCI has helped communities across Metro Atlanta re-tool and redesign over the years, creating more places that attract residents and businesses alike," said Tad Leithead, ARC chairman.

Milton Helps Summit Hill Elementary Celebrate Arbor Day

Milton Helps Summit Hill Elementary Celebrate Arbor Day

MILTON, GA -- The City of Milton helped Summit Hill Elementary School celebrate Arbor Day 2011 in a big way.

Milton donated $240 to purchase 830 saplings for students to plant on public property.

Local firefighters also joined Summit Hill parents and staff on Friday, Feb. 18 to hand out the trees to students as they left the school and boarded their buses. See photos from the event.

The money came from Milton's Tree Recompense Fund, which is paid by developers when they remove trees that cannot be replanted on their property, according to Lynn Tully, Milton's director of community development.

By law, the money must go to greenery on public land, like parks and fire stations.

MILTON, GA -- The public is invited and encouraged to attend a special Crabapple Crossings plan meeting on Monday, Mar. 14 at 5:00 p.m. at Milton City Hall (13000 Deerfield Parkway, 30004).

The meeting, presented by Roswell-based Lew Oliver, Inc., Whole Town Solutions, will delve into the transportation, connectivity, building design, identity and long-term planning needs of the Crabapple Crossings community and Milton's future City Center.

There will be a short presentation and discussion on a number of topics, including zoning tools like the transfer of development rights, which is a potentially powerful conservation option that could greatly influence the area's "village" concept.

The goal of this process is updating and retooling the existing Crabapple Crossroads Master Plan to more accurately reflect the economic, transportation and growth realities of the area.
